Chinese LBS to grow rapidly, but carriers are challenged(GPS business News)

CCID Consulting statistics show that the market size of LBS reached CNY 485 million ($71 million) in the first half of 2008, LBS being defined as “value added services that are provided by operators to provide location, navigation, and other services to mobile phone users through SMS, WAP, and other methods”. CCID estimates that, for the entire year 2008, LBS revenue will be around CNY 1 billion (S146 million). CCID Consulting forecasts that LBS will achieve rapid growth as 3G users and services develop; in 2012, the LBS market revenue is expected to reach CNY 3.8 billion ($560 million).  more>>

PON Codes – a New Geographic Post Code System for Ireland

In early 2010, the Irish postal market will be opened to competition (until now, only the government’s « An Post » could deliver ordinary mail), and from that point forward the non- unique addressing system used in Ireland for hundreds of years will no longer be practical for delivering mail. To support the demand for more precise addressing from industries dependent on vehicle navigation, GPS Ireland, a GPS company in Ireland, has developed a post code system based on geographic coordinates. The system is referred to as PON Codes, short for Position Orientated Navigation Codes. PON Codes are seven character alphanumeric codes which have a mathematical relationship to latitude and longitude. more >>>

Palm selects Webraska for navigation on Treo Pro in Europe

Masternaut, the provider of Webraska Navigation, said today its navigation software is pre-installed on the new Palm Treo Pro smartphone in Europe. This new Smartphone (the first GPS-enabled phone from Palm) will be sold by two wireless operators in the Netherlands and in Italy and available unlocked in the rest of Europe. more>>
